Review - Hungry Lu's

days and days and days went by that i passed by that random, run down looking sub shop two doors down from lucy's here in OB, and wondered.... "i wonder when thats gonna go under..." and alas. that time came about 4 months ago. and just this past week, its replacement finally opened. Hungry Lu's! its quite the fancy little build out. it looks really nice and clean and what not. its whole deal is that they bake all of their bread in house daily and make lots of fun looking cookies and italian treats in there as well.
now heres my concern with this. this place is FILLED with cookies and pastries and goodies, and yet, i cant imagine this place being SO busy that ALL those goodies will be sold today. or tomorrow. or the day after. so do i think they are baking fresh cookies and shit every day? no. should they? yet. because if youre gonna advertise that you make all this good stuff in house, you might as well do it everyday. well, now that i got that out of the way. onto the good news!

the sandwiches were great! they advertise that everyday they have a 5 dollar sandwich (usually 8 inches) and the past week they have had the torpedo as that deal. jeff got himself one of thems
for 5 bucks, its a helluva deal. it beats the pants off of a subway 5 dollar footlong. i snagged a bite of his sando while he wasnt looking. actually, i just asked if i could have a bite, and he said yes.

now of course for a decent review, i needed to try multiple things. so i got the number 8 sandwich, the Hungry Lu's Special (6.50)
rosemary PORKCHETTA, sweet capocolla, mortadella, havarti cheese, lettuce, tomato, pepperoncinis. this was a yummy sandwich. the meats were flavorful and nicely sliced. the lettuce was crisp, the house baked bread was good. it was soft, a little bit of chew to it, which is nice, and i didnt have it toasted, but i get a feeling that it would be a nicely toasted roll.
it was good.

now also i decided to order one of their 8 inch Personal Pizza's (all 5 bucks), i got the OB Special, it had ham, pineapple, mozz, tomatoe sauce, and a sweet and spicy pepper relish.
it was decent. topping wise it was plentiful and it had good flavor, but it wasnt very crispy on the bottom. the crust was actually fairly soggy by the time i got home to eat it (5 minutes) it felt as if it could have baked at a higher temp for a few more minutes to crisp it up a little more. that woulda been nice. but either way, for 5 bucks, its a good lil personal.

i highly recommend check out Hungry Lu's. i know ill be back and ill bring allison cuz i heard their eggplant parm sandwich is on point. check it out!

Review - Rubicon Deli

I AINT DEAD YET, MOTHERFUCKER!!!

i know, i know, ive been slacking. im sorry. ive been busy. i was working 6 days aweek during track season, and now its restaurant week, im just...busy, ok? but im not dead. and i still like food. i havent had many chances to get out and try anything new too recently, but ill try my best in the neat future!!! work is bound to slow down a lil bit and then ill be able to go enjoy (hopefully) some meals.

and now heres something completely different!

ive always seen other people blog and review rubicon deli in mission beach and it looked awesome to me. and god knows i love me some motherfucking sang-wiches. so on my only day off a few weeks ago everyone else was working so i decided to hop on my bike, and ride from ob to mission to go check out rubicon deli. i hadnt ridden my bike that far in quite some time. it was hard. to put it as jake said "you never forget how to ride a bike, you only forget how fucking tiring it is." perfect. so anyway i got there, and there was a handfull of people inside eating, i got up and ordered my sando. i went with a half of a Rubicon Special (6.25)
turkey breast, smoked gouda, roasted red peppers, pesto mayo, lettuce, your choice of bread. my choice of bread was the blue cheese bread. awesome choice. it was really fucking good. the bread was delish, fresh (and baked in house). the turkey and cheese and peppers and pesto all worked together well, and i also liked that the bleu cheese bread give it a lil more tang as well. i enjoyed the sandwich thoroughly. as i was standing there deciding what to order, i was also looking in the glass case with all the drinks n shit, that also housed some made in house pre packaged salads n shit. i grabbed this one.

i think it was like 5 bucks? but i opened it up and it was jam packed with noodles. so much so that the first couple bites i tried to take, i surely looked like a fucking spaz flinging noodles across the joint with my stupid plastic fork that acted as a spring loaded noodle launcher. but i digress. what i noticed in the noodle salad were perfect brunois (tiny dice) bell peppers and green onions. now that made me smile and made me feel like they actually put some thought and love and hand work into this little packaged noodle salad. and it tasted really good. crisp, fresh, tangy, peanut-y. it was good. and huge. the fucking noodles were like a magician pulling napkins out of his sleeve. i wasnt able to finish it and my whole sando. had i not been on my bike with no sort of bag or basket or any noodle holding recepticle, i would have surely taken it home for allison.

over all, i was very pleased with my visit, and look forward to coming back and trying everything else. i guess they have a cafe opening soon in mission hills? i overheard mission hills while i was there eating...

O.B. Torpedo Tastings

i love me some sandwiches, obviously. torpedoes are a top 5 for sure of all different kinds. now there is a decent amount of places in O.B. that makes these sandwiches, and here is a lil post about some of them! first up is Chris's Liquor. People tend to hail Chris's as the best deli in O.B., some say its the best in san diego. its not my top choice, but its a 5 minute walk and it is pretty good. my favorite part about Chris's is that on tuesdays, between 4:20 and 5 oclock, you can buy any of their sando's for $4.20. so i grabbed a torpedo last time i was there.
it was good. the bread was slightly stale and little bit too chewy for my liking. it was tasty nonetheless. and at 4.20 you really cant beat that for Boars Head meats in a sando. the lettuce was a little wilted so i feel like it was cut the day before sore something, but it was a good sandwich.

then about a week later allison and i were hungry for dinner, wanted something simple, and didnt wanna stray far from home, so we went with our usual Poma's stop. now i havent done a Poma's Meatball Sub post yet...YET. i will. because i firmly believe its the best meatball sub ive ever had. the eggplant parm sandwich is killer as well. allison OBVIOUSLY gets that one. i have heard nothing but good things about the pizza there, yet havent been able to make a trip where i could avoid ordering a sandwich. so i forced myself to get a torpedo here since i had the idea for this blog post.
now i asked that they toast it, which is why it looks a little greasy. the oils and fats in the meats and cheeses kinda gave it that glisten. it was a really good sandwich. at i think 6.50 its a huge one and when it comes on an amoroso roll, you can be upset either way. it was a really good sando.

now my first choice of delis when it comes to OB, is of course the Olive Tree Market. the store and wine shop itself is amazing and the deli is even better. i typically go for the hot sandiwhces here (the james dean on an onion roll is my main shit), but i had to roll with the torpedo to round out the holy trinity of OB delis. now when i ordered it, they informed me they were out of the italian roll that it comes on, but the chick said she usually gets it on ciabatta when she eats it herself, so i said do it. she toasted the ciabatta, and it gave me a few minutes to cruise the store, make my difficult chip choice, then peruse the coolers for which delicious drink i would wash it down with (i went with sour cream and onion kettle chips and a berry yerba mate.)
now i really feel like this was the FRESHEST of the group. the meats and cheeses had been very recently slices, and none of the vegetables seemed old whatsoever. the toasted ciabatta was a good choice and honestly, if i get the torpedo here again i will probably request it as such. this was was also about 7 bucks i believe. AND it comes with a pickle!

so my judgment is this, the best torpedo is O.B. issssss.....

.....Olive Tree Market. they were all good sando's, but something about the Olive Tree one just clicked for me. so get out there and grind on some grub.

Review - Pho Point Loma and Grill

so as you could see from my post about the OB noodle house, i love me some Pho. and as you can tell from my post about Lucky Seafood, i love banh mi. so when i want to sink my teeth into both at the same time, i swing by Pho Point Loma. about a block south west of Rosecrans on Midway, its nestled in between an o'reileys auto parts and a framing shop. i stopped in there probably about 10 months ago to check it out and was very happy with my experience, so i decided i would definatly come back. i have been back a few times since and have had a good meal each time. they have a huge menu, lots of variety, and its very inexpensive. the service is great, its super fast and friendly. now what i have to say about the banh mi is that they are really making stuff back there. they marinade and bbq their own pork,  instead of microwaving premade shit like most places. and all of the ingredients in the sandwich are fresh and copius. at 3.95 per sandwich, its more expensive than most banh mi shops, but worth it.

as you can see in the above picture, the slices of bbq pork are think and delicious. not chewy at all. very tender.
my broth on my pho was delish as always, the meatballs and well done steak were flavorful as always. it was just a yummy bowl of pho. at 5.95 it is a great value.
allisons veggie and tofu egg noodles. cheap and LOTS of them. it was a huge plate of noodles. i actually forgot to try it haha. i kinda had my hands full. for my beverage, i ordered the lemon iced tea, and what was nice is that i see them brewing the tea in the back, and i actually looked over and saw one of the ladies squeezing the lemon for my drink. it was delish.
so yea, i have not had a bad experience here yet on 5 visits. so i would def. reccomend it. its not mind blowingly special, but its good food, great prices, and the service is fast and attentive. check it out!

Review - Azucar

Azucar is a Cuban style Patiserrie in the heart of O.B. its been open for just about 3 years now i believe. i remember being stoked when they opened because there really isnt much for pastries in ocean beach, and god knows i hate leaving the bubble when i dont have to. so when you add in the prospect of a cuban kick to everything, im even more enticed. now ive been coming here once every few months since they opened, and the food hasnt changed, its still delicious. i typically get the same thing every time i go, but not all at once haha. i pick and choose between the same 5 things, so that i dont feel like a fucking fat ass. but today i had to get everything, for the sake of the blog. im doing this for you, the reader! anywho, onto the food.
this little ball of yum is one of their famous Pastelito de Carne. little meat pie, if you will. for a believe a buck fiddy you can sink your teeth into the lil fucker and open up a pouch of sweet, sweet, meat. the meat itself isnt sweet, the meat is actually deliciously spiced ground beef, but the top of the pastry itself if brushed with a nice sugary glaze before being baked. mmm.
siiiiiick.
next is the Pastel de Queso y Guava. a cream cheese and guava paste - pastry. this thing is like a toaster strudel on crack. they have other various pastry of this sort, but the cream cheese and guava paste is other worldly.
this one that i had was actually not stuffed to the brim like they usually are, but i digress. still tasty.
keeping with the guava and cream cheese trend, they have multiple different panini sandwiches, and my favorite is the Havana - Roasted Turkey, Guava Paste, Cream Cheese. grilled to perfection, this combination is like the cuban equivalent of a post thanksgiving left over sandwich. amazing. they give you a choice of a green salad of fried plantain chips. i always get the chips, which on this visit, were slightly stale, i was a little bummed. but good nonetheless, served with a side of mojo sauce, which is filled with garlicky glory. after this i decided to try one of the mini desserts they have in the display, they cinco leches cake.
i brought this home to share with allison tonight, but that didnt change the awesome flavor of it. its their take on the classic tres leches cake. its an almond financier cake soaked with 5 different milks topped with a dulce de leche glaze and candied almonds. it was rich, but very good. i was happy with it.

now as i said earlier that the food hasnt changes in 3 years, there is something i noticed today. i really feel that the upkeep of the store front is really taking a toll. the tables were all pretty dirty, the floor was covered in crumbs, the white drapes on the wall were becoming stained at the bottoms. it was just kind of a bummer seeing that they arent putting much pride in the appearance of the shop. i know its OB and its supposed to be rugged and dirty, but come on. have some pride. keep your shit tight. be proud of what you do in all senses of it. at the end of the day you are supposed to be impressing people, make that happen, or live your life being content with mediocrity.

with that being said, i wont stop coming here. its delicious. and i highly recommend it. check it out!

Review - Empirehouse Urban Palate

yea, its an old house that was turned into a couple different shitty restaurants, and everyone is saying that this is the one thats breaking the curse. meh. theres a different between breaking the curse and not going under. i feel that this place is just gonna float on top of the water, barely. i hardly consider that "breaking the curse". allison and i went in today for a nice lunch, and when we go to the front door, the girl who obviously worked there just kinda smiled at us as we walked in the door and didnt really tell us anything about seating ourselves, or she would be right with us, she was too much into the conversation she was having with the two artsy fartsy guys sitting out front. so we sat ourselves outside in the sun and waiting for menus, which came in a few minutes. now the menu is pretty much all over the place, but thats not necasarilly a bad thing, i mean theres plenty of places that can do muliple different kinds of fare and do them right. so it was a little difficult for me to decide what i wanted to try, which ill admit, is my own fault because i can never make up my damn mind. allison opted for the Grilled Cheese, where at 6 bucks you can choose two different kinds of cheese from their list, and can add an additional cheese, or assorted veggies for 1 dollar,  and meats for 3 dollars. she wanted havarti, white cheddar, and gorgonzola. and it came out like this
the bread was nicely toasted and the cheese was good, but i mean come on, its grilled cheese, how bad can it be? and then on the side is a spear of house pickle. and then that big wide open space on the plate is just empty. so im really curious as to why you would plate it like this. with so much room on the plate and one pickle? no dipping sauce, or other various accoutrement? for 7 bucks, sandwich, and piece of pickle. interesting. as for me, i wanted to get a burger, and i decided against all my previous knowledge of "house specialty" burgers, went with the exotic sounding Zenmai Burger (8 bucks)
apparently zenmai is a marinated japanese fern shoot. and they paired it with havarti cheese and lettuce. hm. i was intruiged by the zenmai and also by the supposed "house formed - cast iron grilled" burger. yea....ive had cast iron burgers before, and this, was no cast iron sear. well, maybe there was a sear on it, but i couldnt tell because of the quarter inch thick flavorless patty. by house formed im guessing they mean that they buy a huge 5 pound buld stick of ground beef, and form it into patties. sans salt and pepper, and heaven forbid they put anything else in there either. the zenmai was just whatever, i think it doesnt really belong on a burger. and for 8 bucks, you also get one of those special little house pickle spears that are so expensive to make that they only put one per plate. we also wanted something to split so we just ordered a plate of tater tots, just to smack on.
they were tater tots, not house made or anything, but fried nicely. they came with "worchestshire" ketchup and garlic aioli. nothing to write home about. and at 5.50 for an order, id rather just go buy a bag of tots at the store for way less and bake them at home. now another problem i had was this. alot of people seem to be stoked on the happy attitude and talkative nature of all the girls that work there, but i feel differently. mainly becuase most of the time they were talking to me, it seemed like they thought i was 5 years old. "HEY GUYSSS mmm was it YUMMY????" "ooooh are you all done with that??? okie dokie ill just take this away for yaaaaaa" so on and so forth. it got kinda obnoxious.

final word is, if they dropped the price of everything on the menu by a buck fiddy, everything would be better ten fold. but for what you get, the prices are pretty steep. oh well. we shall see how this place plays out. check it out if you want...

Review - Lucky Seafood

oh banh mi. how i love thee. lets me count the ways. well, actually im not gonna count the ways...theres too many and i dont think my bandwidth would allow it. that shit would be 404'd so quick. but anyway, i love banh mi. it is honestly, probably my favorite food. i dont think ive ever been able to actually decide on a favorite food, but i have now. after eating all around SD trying to find the best banh mi, and not actually making a decisions until ive tried places more than once, i think im ready to call out Lucky Seafood as my favorite. im not saying its the BEST, im just saying its MY favorite.

for those of you uninformed as to what banh mi IS, banh mi is a vietnamese sandwich that is composed on a toasted french baguette, filled with (typically) pickled carrots and daikon, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeno, pate, mayonaise, and various meats. the meats most often used are steamed or grilled pork, pork belly, head cheese, ham, vietnamese sausage, and chicken. ok, now that we know what it is, time for the review.

Lucky Seafood is in a strip mall up on mira mesa and black mountain road, its an awesome little asian supermarket as it is. its got lots of sweet ass shit. sauces, treats, drinks, lots of yum. but inside they have a deli area that has lots of awesome food, sweet and sour this, steamed that, bun this, roll that. all of which im sure is good because it smells and looks awesome, but ive only sampled the banh mi fare here.
they have only 4 or 5 options of sandwich, but if you buy two bbq bahn mi, you get a third sandwich free. so today i got two of those plus a steamed meatball sando, also a dr pepper. grand total of 7.48! they are big sandwiches too, stuffed to the brim. the beauty is that these are actually toasted, not microwaved like lots of other joints. they put a decent amount of yummy pate on their sandwiches which is heaven. my companion jeff rolled with me today and has never had a vietnamese sando before, and needless to say, he was pretty sketched out by the idea. but i told him dude, bbq pork? all you need in life.
as you can see, stuffed to the brim. pate was on point. pork was flavorful and not chewy. texture was great. it was just a melt in your mouth meal. i was so stoked. then finally, jeff was ready for a couple bites. he said, ill try a bite or two. but that turned into this
fucking macking on it SO HARD. he was shocked. he said it was delicious. he said i was right. i know, jefferey, i know. so yes, my friends. mosey on over to lucky seafood and inside you will find heaven in a baguette! get on it!

Review - Mardi Gras Cafe and Marketplace.

while i was home on vacation for the weekend, pops had recorded some show with Art Mann, ive never seen it or heard of it, but apparently he goes to allllll sorts of festivals and parties and shit all around the country and checks them out. so the episode i watched was a crawfish festival in louisiana. as i was watching it, i thought to myself, "is there and good crawfish in san diego???". i was determined to find out. when i got back to SD the other day, i hit yelp in search of that which i so desired. like usual, i found some little hole in the wall that i never would have been to. and lucky for me, it was 5 minutes down the street from my apartment! so with companion Adam in tow, we headed over there for lunch before our screening of Thor at fashion valley. it seems to be a tiny little place judging by the store front, but when you walk in, its surprisingly large. old creole lady working behind the counter making peoples food. few people finishing up their meals sittin at the plastic tables. adam had already decided on the Muffaletta sandwich(8.99 regular, 12.99 large)
muffaletta is a new orleans sandwich based on the large sesame-focaccia style loaf that is used. it typically has an olive relish, ham, salami, capicola, pepperoni, emmantaler, and provolone. i believe this one only had a few of those meats. it was good though. the flavors were all good, it wasnt soggy because of the relish, and the bread wasnt stale or anything. it wasnt the most amazing sandwich ive ever had, but it was good, and HUGE!. now i had already decided upon a crawfish po boy for myself (9.99), but when i ordered it, and she started making it, she informed me she didnt have enough crawfish for a whole sandwich. i though that was a little odd, but i figured it was because she just sold all the crawfish because hey, maybe this place is actually popular? i dont know. but i decided to have half crawfish and half oyster. so this is what i ended up with.
the crawfish were good, they were crispy. not over fried. the sesame roll was toasted. under each fried portion, there was tomatoes and a slam dressed out with a yummy mayonaise based dressing.
the oysters were huge, they were like 3 bites each. once again, fried nicely, not over done. same slaw tomato party that was on the other half. i ate most of the sandwich, but it was pretty big. i saw her pulling the oysters and crawfish out of the freezer, but honestly doesnt bother me with a place like this. if they were some creole restaurant claiming to be fresh and all that jazz, i wouldnt be stoked at all. but they have been open for 23 years, so i guess they are doing it right haha. now onto the main attraction. the WALL OF FIRE!!!!
yes thats right. those are all different bottle of hot sauce. they have a huuuge selection to buy from. i actually found a bottle of one of my favorite sauces that i havent been able to find for the past year because its been on back-order. up on the counter they have a little tasting station for some of their hottest selections. and then on each of the tables, there is random half full bottles of different ones strewn about that you can use freely on your food.
so i enjoyed my lunch. ill be back for sure. it wasnt mindblowingly amazing, but it was good and its a different step from my usual sandwich routine. plus they have a large menu with lots of other options on it. also with the hot sauce options, if i dont like whatever i order, just douse that shit!!! hell yea. check it out!!

Review - Tiny's Tavern

i like booze. i like food. i like going to bars that have both. luckily the closest bar to me in walking proximity is Tiny's Tavern, in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA, The Planet Earth. Tiny's tavern is owned and operated by i small happy looking hawaiian man named, of course, Tiny. not sure on the back story of how or when he came here and opened his bar, but i am glad that it is here now. the bar itself serves only beer and wine, but has a small kitchen attatched to it that has a fairly large menu, including may hawaiian treats! theres an outdoor patio with many tvs and a foosball table, and inside there is 3 pool tables a shuffleboard table and a few coin operated golf games, you know the kind...there is a rack to hang your hat and everyones got a smile on their face, and 90% of the time if you stop in you will see tiny sitting at the bar himself drinking and socializing. BUT...this is a food blog afterall, and this will be about the food. ive eaten quite a few times but only snapped a few pics the last time i was there. they have lots of different kinds of sliders, burgers, sandies, fried apps, and standard mexican fare, as well as a hawaiian specialty area. i have had their original sliders, the veggie sliders, and the BBQ kalua pig sliders. they have all been pretty tasty and are quite filling. on this latest semi-buzzed not really hungry but food sounds soooooo good adventure, i over ordered thinking my companion jeff would help me eat, but he did not. so i stuffed my fat ass with this. i ordered the kalua pig burrito (7.95):
which features black beans, spnish rice, pico de gallo, white tomatillo sauce, lettuce, mixed cheese, and pulled pork. it was big. really big. and it was stuffed full of fixins, which is always a good thing. the kalua pig had really good flavor and was just slighty salty, which i kinda fancied, personally. it ate pretty good and everything in there appeared to be fairly fresh.
and then on a whim i also wanted somethin crunchy and cheesy to mack on so i also ordered the Philly Cheese Nachos (7.95):
which were pretty awesome. i love cheese sauce. its a weak point. its my kryptonite. put nacho cheese sauce on anything and ill eat it. except for penis. i dont want to eat penis. but these nachos had cheese sauce, grilled skirt steak, and roasted bell peppers and onions. it was like a nacho version of a philly cheese steak. what a lucky coincidence for them! unless they planned that. which im assuming they did...

...yea. so that what i ate there last time. their happy hour is all day monday and 2-7 all other days of the week. 6 dollar domestic pitchers so thats sweet. i regular this place, so if you say "hey travis, wanna go to tinys?" i will most likely say yes.

check it out!

Review - Giorgino's Deli

so since you saw my attempt at Cheesesteaks a few posts back, i was on a mission yesterday to find the bomb ass steaks in SD. ive been to Gaglione Bro's a few times, they are good, but i wanted to try somethin else. so after a decent amount of yelpin' i fist pumped my way up to Golden Hill, by way of the scenic route through downtown-north park-south park (i wasnt lost, shut the fuck up!), and found myself (finally) at Giorgino's on 28th. its a tight little place. small, but with probably 6 tables inside and a few tables out front in the sunshine, i walked in, no one there. stepped up and said "yo, lemme git that!" referring to the Philly Cheese Combo (8.97) which includes a regular philly (meaning just meat, onions, and cheese), a canned soda, and you choice of; fries, cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, pasta salad, and WAIT....heres the kicker....a soft pretzel. YES! like i said! lemme git that! i love having the option of a big hot soft pretzel as my side dish. its awesome! so heres the thing. good yelp reviews, boars head meat, Amoroso rolls (the best, if ya dont know, now ya know, wigga). it all sounds too good. lets peep game, homie.
10 inches long. soft, yet toasty, smellin good, and piping hot. lets get it. just a note. let yours cool off for a few minutes. i literally have no skin on the roof of my mouth due to the huge blister that this baby caused. but GOD DAMNIT IT WAS WORTH IT! killer sandwich. it was seasoned correctly, it was tender, flavorful, gooey. it was an awesome sando. i only ate half at the time though because i had to make room for:
the Pork Roll. apparently this is a Jersey thing. ive never seen it before but godamnit was it tasty. the offocial synopsis is this: "Pork Roll, or Taylor Ham, Grilled Pork with American Cheese on a Kaiser Roll." oh yea. oh yea. oh yea. get in my mouth. this bitch was basically an upgraded version of one of my homestyle fav's, the grilled SPAMwich. this thick cut ham had the same texture, but 1000% times more flavor of spam. with the soft roll and the melty cheese, it was a winner. also only ate half of this one. because i had to eat at least half of my
AWESOME SIZED SOFT PRETZELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!
DOUBLE PRETZEL POWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok, no its just the one pretzel, but it was soft, hot, salty, and came with like, a half cup of plain mustard. just the way it should be. ate half. finished off my dr. pepper*, they wrapped up all my halves, and i bid them adieu. only to meet with them in the near future. for sure. all of this food cost my about 15 bucks, but it was two meals for me since i microwaved all my left overs a few hours later and stuffed myself to the brim for the second time that day. and it ate just as well as the first time. so this is definatly a 2 thumbs up type deal. i highly recommend it my friends. go! do it! what are you waiting for???
